Annual Yearlist Challenge - Returns for 2023
Since 2009 the Fylde Bird Club has organised an annual yearlist competition, the aim being to see or hear the most species within the Fylde recording area in one calander year. Between 2009 and 2019 a total of twenty-six Fylde Bird Club members have competed for the Yearlist Challenge trophy, with the list record being held by Len Blacow with his massive 210 species accumulated in 2011. The comparative league was introduced in 2018 to see which competitior manages to best their previous year's score by the biggest margin. No competition was held between 2020 and 2022 due to the covid-19 pandemic and associated travel restrictions.
Rules: Submit your first list update by the end of February 2023. No late entries will be allowed after the 28th February 2023. Download the template list of species to record and submit your sightings using this link below: ![]()
You simply put a ’1’ next to each species you have seen or heard.
Only Birds within the Fylde Recording Area Count: Sea to A6 and Rivers Ribble to Conder. You will need to send your updated lists of species to fyldebirdclub@gmail.com at least every 3 months (i.e. end of March, June, September). The final list must be received by 15th January 2024 so that the winner can be announced at the January 2024 meeting. To ensure that all entrants have an equally fair chance to see rare and scarce species during the competition, please promtly put news out on the Fylde WhatsApp group, as welll as continuing to send all relevant bird news to Rare Bird Alert: - phone 02070-382820 or Birdguides - 0333 577 2473. Any suppressed birds cannot be included in yearlist totals. Escaped birds do not count. BOU taxonomy will be used during the competition. All records are subject to review by the Fylde Bird Club's records committee and only records that are considered to be accurate and beyond doubt will be accepted, in order to maintain the absolute integrity of the Fylde Bird Club's database of records.
