Site Work
Conder Pool
In April 2016, following consultation with the RSPB, Fylde Bird Club members joined RSPB Leighton Moss staff at Conder Pool to help improve the habitat for breeding Common Terns. The work involved remodeling the islands to make them more suitable for nesting birds, and the deployment of a floating tern raft. The work was a massive success and as a result a pair of Common Terns have nested or attempted to nest at the site every summer since, although they have yet to take to the tern raft. An additional confirmation ofthe effectivness of the work came in the form of a pair of Avocets which have also bred at the site every summer since, the first such breeding in the north of the Fylde recording area. The RSPB undertook more re-modelling of the islands in the autumn of 2018 which will hopefully enhance the site even further.
The club has also made several modifications to the viewing screen that overlooks Conder Pool in order to improve the viewing experience for visiting birders. In the winter of 2018 a new roof was installed to the shelter by Paul Slade, Paul Elllis and Dave Hall which will add vital protection from the elements, making the viewing even more enjoyable.
