Bird Boxes
The Fylde Bird Club provides bird boxes for a number of specialist projects within our recording area, aimed at conserving and enhancing populations of some of our rarest breeding species or those that are under the highest levels of decline.
The club is always keen to assist in local projects, either with advice or through the purchase of boxes, so if you have a project that would benefit from bird boxes and would like the input of the club then email us with the details.
Some examples of bird box projects the club has partnered can be found below.

Lytham Hall Swift Boxes and Call Playback System
In 2018, along with the staff and volunteers at Lytham Hall, bird club committee member Ian Walker assisted with the installation of Swift boxes on the out buildings where it is hoped Swifts may try and breed. Swift numbers are in sharp decline and part of the reason is due to a loss of potential breeding habitat. The club also funded a sound calling system, a design successfully used by the Swift Conservation Group, to be installed near the boxes in the hope that it will aid in attracting Swifts to use them in the summer months. |
Barn Owl Boxes
One of our most charasmatiic and loved species, thankfully the Barn Owl has a strong foothold in the Fylde and the bird club has supplied materials and completed boxes that have been installed in a number of locations across our area by licensed individuals. The best areas to observe Barn Owls in our recording area are around the village of Eagland Hill near Pilling where a number of boxes have been installed, and at Marton Mere where birds regularly use the box installed on the island. |
Tree Sparrow Boxes
The Fylde recording area holds a number of scattered Tree Sparrow populations which the bird club has helped to conserve through the installation of bird boxes. Over 45 boxes have been installed at Todderstaffe Hall which have helped to produce a thriving sparrow colony, whilst other boxes have been erected around the villages of Stalmine and Warton where populations still persist, all of which have seen high uptake rates. |
Peregrine Box in the South Fylde
Following initial inspection of a building in the south Fylde (exact site undisclosed due to a shooting incident) by a pair of Peregrines in 2012 the bird club provided a purpose built Peregrine box to be installed on site in order to encourage the birds to nest. The birds returned the following year and successfully nested in the box, although the use of it since has been sporadic due to external factors. Peregrine remain a rare breeder within the Fylde, please email all records of birds at potential nest or roost sites. |
