The most wanted species

Of the 317 species on the Fylde list there are twenty that have not been seen by anyone on the ranking, including fourteen species not recorded for over thirty years: Melodious Warbler (1972), Purple Heron (1970), Nutcracker (1968), Crested Tit (1964), Nightingale (1965), Gull-billed Tern (1955), Black-eared Wheatear (1940), Black-winged Stilt (1928), Great Snipe (1917), Red Grouse (c1899), Pallas's Sandgrouse (1888), White-tailed Eagle (1875), Sociable Plover (1860s) and Little Bustard (1858), and one - Macaronesian Shearwater (1975) - that was dead when it was found. The remaining five species that have eluded all the Fylde birders listed on the ranking are Golden Oriole (2000), Nightjar (1999), Icterine Warbler (1998), Tawny Pipit (1985) and Roller (1982).

The main ranking uses BOU taxonomy, but below this there are additional lists of distinctive forms that are sometimes treated as species, species of uncertain provenance, and species pending acceptance.
